Let’s Boost Your Immune System With Shiitake mushroom

As we come out of lockdown and adjust to a COVID normal life, I wanted to draw your attention to the shiitake mushroom and its amazing health powers. Shiitake mushrooms are important to helping boost your IMMUNE SYSTEM!


Shiitake mushrooms originated in China, however the name was created in Japan. It is available in both fresh and dried forms, dried shiitake has a richer flavour and there are also many different types of the shiitake mushroom which is differentiated by the size of the pileu (the cap part). The mushroom is a central superfood in Japanese cooking and I love to incorporate it into my meals as it is so great for you as well.

Shiitake is abundant in nutrients and some of the nutrients in shiitake mushrooms can help boost your immune function, to decrease the risk of infection and combat against diseases.

They contain

  • Lentinan
  • Protein
  • Iron
  • Vitamin B2, B6
  • Slenium
  • Zinc
  • Antioxidant vitamin C

which all keep your immune system going strong.
Especially Lentinan which is said to be stimulate the immune system as it increases activity in cells that help fight viruses. Lentinan helps triggers cells to react and fight against cancer in the body, laboratory studies have shown that the presence of lentinan helps to slow the growth of cancer.

A 2015 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition concluded that consuming mushrooms has improved cell effect or function and improves gut immunity. There was also a reduction of inflammation due to mushroom consumption.
