WHY JAPANESE OBESITY RATE IS LOWEST AGAIN THIS YEAR?

Latest health reports revealed Japan’s obesity rate is LOWEST in developed countries
Obesity epidemic in Australia worse in 2018, latest health reports revealed. When this health report was released, I was supposed to do an interview for SBS world news, but Telstra’s breaking news took my slot… Damn…

Anyway…

Overweight and obesity is a major public health issue in Australia. Australia’s measured obesity rate now ranks FIFTH among Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) countries (35 countries)

NOOOO !!! IT IS NOT GENETIC!

I can tell you that strongly. Why? because I get to meet lots of Japanese girls who put on over 10kg since they came to Australia.  ( people who are new to Australia and live less than 3 years)

I believe Japanese girls in Australia  put on weight because they eat ;

MUCH LESS JAPANESE MEALS
Japanese girls in Australia feel Japanese are not as tasty here in Australia ( more greasy and sweeter) and also don’t bother cooking Japanese meal at home since ingredients here are expensive. Even they eat Japanese in Japanese restaurants, they contain more sugar and fat.

MORE SUGAR
Sweets are much sweeter here. When I ate Japanese chocolate about 10 years ago, I felt, they are not sweet at all and too small… my Japanese friends who live over 10 years told me the same… scary..

MORE DAIRY
Since Japan is such a tiny country, we don’t have many dairy farmers. Traditional Japanese meal don’t use any dairy. For desserts, our typical desserts after the meal are fruits.
For tea time, we eat Wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets that is made from sticky rice, roasted soybean power, sweet red beans. Of course, we do eat sweets using dairy now and then but not as much as western countries.
Good quality cheese are expensive in Japan ( most people eat processed cheese in Japan now and then). people get exited to have quality Australian cheese ( high in Fat as well)

MORE GLUTEN
Even though we start to eat bread which need butter or margarine ( not good quality fat ) but our main source of carb is rice. but since poor Japanese students tend to buy chap $1 bread … or eat sugar loaded cereal for quick chap breaky … that contribute more usgar… plus dairy because eat with cow milk.

MORE  FAT
We do eat tempura ( deep-fried variety of veggies and seafood ) but always eat with grated daikon ( radish ) to breakdown the fat. In Japanese cuisine, whenever we eat fatty food like fatty fish, deep-fried food, we eat with grated daikon, the white long radish ( also daikon is alkaline food so make our blood neutralised – fat, meat, sugar are all acidic)  but here fish and chips, burger and chips, oily Asian foods… and chunk of meat… fats are everywhere!

MORE RED MEATS
Again, we don’t have much land = red meat ( especially beef ) is much more expensive. We don’t eat steak much, we slice the meat very thinly then cook with vegetables.  300 to 450g beef  ( average of 1 portion of steak ) can feed family of four when we cook Japanese meat dish.

Japanese superfoods are nutrient-rich ancient foods such as miso, konnyaku (aka konjac), seaweeds, daikon, matcha green tea and many  more. These foods are highly alkalising and play a major role in keeping our bodies healthy and are renowned for being both tasty and wholesome. Unfortunately real Japanese superfoods are getting less and less but we can still them!

COOK AT HOME !
Japanese cook at home a lot! Much much more than people in Sydney for sure.
Since I worked as a chef, I know that fact, most chef care only for taste, not your health and waste line… meaning, love adding lots of fat, MSG, dairy A LOT.

I am not asking you to cook old fashion Japanese meals like above, trust me, I don’t cook like that every day…actually most of the time but being able to cook healthy Japanese meals, know how to use Japanese superfoods to cook non Japanese meals  are real advantage for your health, waste line and beauty! basically COOK AND EAT WISELY without spending hours in the kitchen. that’s  what what I do!
