BUT even you follow these rules, you still get matcha that tastes bad and doesn’t give you health benefits

Here, I have TWO KEY POINTS  that you NEED to follow when looking to buy matcha, as I only want you to buy the highest quality matcha. These tips, that even I didn’t know until writing my JAPANESE SUPERFOODS COOKBOOK, a couple years ago.

NOW you know the basic RULES  and follow these points, you are MASTER OF MATCHA

TWO KEY POINTS THAT PEOPLE TEND TO MISS …

Avoid buying matcha that is stored in transparent packaging.

Why?

Matcha is very light sensitive. When exposed to light for long periods of time, matcha loses its power, taste and quality. Even the small window in the package in the image below has negative effects on the matcha inside the packet.

BAD EXAMPLE OF MATCHA PACKAGING

Only buy matcha that is stored in a dark packet or container, or matcha that you can NOT see through the package.

Avoid buying matcha that is exposed to air often

Why?

Matcha is also super sensitive to air. In combination with light, air affects matcha so that it oxidises, discolouring the tea into a yellowish tone. The taste and aroma will also dissipate, all the health benefits diminishing with them. So make sure you buy matcha that is in a sealed. Sounds super simple to buy sealed matcha, right? but… I often see matcha exposed to light and air at whole food bulk-buy stores and some tea speciality stores that sell high quality matcha.

BAD EXAMPLE – MATHCA AT BULK -BUY WHOLE FOODS STORE

Look at the yellowish oxidised matcha on the bottom… !! Even the expensive, high quality matcha originating from Japan that costs $335.95 per kilo will oxidise and lose its quality and the health benefits it offers if stored in a transparent jar and exposed to the air frequently

When you go to bulk whole foods stores, you can actually open the jar and expose the matcha to the air … which is the WORST condition for matcha.
I love shopping at bulk whole foods stores that focus on sustainability and zero waste initiatives… but not great for matcha shopping.

REMEMBER
Price does matter, but storage conditions matter too!

So to counterbalance the eating and drinking that comes with celebrating the holiday season, make sure you know how and where to buy the highest quality matcha so you can take advantage of the health benefits it offers.
