I kept hearing how tasty vegan ramen was at RaRa so I had to go try it for myself…And I’m so glad I did!
After hopping off the train at Redfern my friend and I took a quick 3 minute walk from Redfern Station to RaRa excited to dig into some vegan ramen. RaRa is as a local Redfern ramen bar which serves traditional bowls of ramen that you’d slurp up on the streets of Japan. Serving signature broths made fresh everyday and with hand-made noodles…I got hungry just thinking about it!
RaRa Entrance
Even though we went early, (like 5pm) there was already a queue. As we ate, the queue grew longer and longer filled with hungry customers. Luckily, for some reason we managed to get in straight away.
For anyone planning to go my advice is to be prepared to wait or go early to beat the queue.
The line outside the door. So busy!
A peak inside the busy RaRa kitchen
My mission was of course to have some vegan ramen but once I saw vegan baos on RaRa’s snack menu I had to try it too.
The Vegan Jackfruit Bao is filled with seasoned slow cooked jackfruit, shiso pickled enoki mushrooms, pickled purple cabbage and black garlic vegan mayo.
Sounds amazing right? I ordered as an entrée.
No fake meat was used and it tasted absolutely delicious! Fabulously balanced flavour. So happy!
Vegan Jackfruit Bao $12.50
Then came my main course…
There were two Vegan Ramen options available:
The first one was a Vegan Miso Ramen was topped with grilled seasoned tofu, charred sweet corn, bean sprouts, pickled bamboo shoots, shallots and black fungus. The Miso ramen, to me was too sweet for my liking, similarly the cooked aburaage (Inari skin) was too sweet as well.
When I saw the bowl, I first thought it was too small…. But don’t worry there are plenty of noodles inside, definitely not a small portion!
Vegan Miso Ramen $18.80
The second option was a Vegan Soy Shio which was a soy-based broth with specialty tare (seasoning) served with grilled tomato seasoned with black pepper, seasoned bamboo, shallots. I thought tomato on ramen?! What? I had never seen such thing in my entire life but… it really works!
Broth was so tasty!
Vegan Soy Shio $16.90
After trying both I definitely prefer the Shio soy ramen. Even my friend (who’s a meat lover) preferred the vegan Shio soy too!
Overall, I will definitely go back to have more Shio soy ramen next time, it was such a pleasurable experience. If your on the lookout for tasty vegan ramen I highly recommend giving RaRa Redfern a try!
Until next time
