Fukujyu Sake Brewery in Kobe, Japan

This sake brewery in Kobe is a must-visit for sake fans, as you can explore and taste different types of premium sake! Enjoy the view of  Japanese traditional buildings and a lovely garden, while also having the opportunity to look at the sake making processes!

Visit to Fukujyu Sake Brewery

We got to visit the Fukujyu Sake Brewery, located in Kobe, Japan. It was a bit nostalgic for me because my university was in Nada. Kobe is close from my parents’ place but it was the first time for my hubby to visit, even though he came to Japan with me more than 10 times.

Sake is a type of Japanese alcohol that has a clean and refreshing taste. This brewery has won many international awards and served sake at the Novel Prize Award Ceremony’s banquet.

Located where the most idealistic weather facilitates the process of sake-making, Fukujyu brewery has a main brewing facility as well as a fine dining restaurant.

Left: Entrance of the Brewery. Right: Komodaru.

The brewery is built by a traditional Japanese architect, with its intricate designs. At the entrance, a sphere is always in front of the brewery. There is a Sake keg, also called a Komodaru, which was used to label and transport sake about 100 years ago.

Left: barrel used for brewing sake. Right: saka gura.

The barrel you see at the left is one they use to brew sake. Able to hold up to 6 kilolitres of sake, it was large enough for children to play on it when it wasn’t being used. This one is a good photo spot, as it’s got a bench to sit on.

As you explore, you will find a nice garden surrounding a building. This is the saka gura (factory), whereby the sake is processed. We didn’t have a booking, so we didn’t go, but if you’re interested in the production steps of sake, do check it out.

Within the brewery, they have a traditional restaurant called Sakabayashi. They serve Japanese traditional cuisine coupled with sake! I highly recommend you visit.

You can taste different kinds of sake and purchase sake-relate souvenirs.

You can tour around the brewery and taste their premium sake for free, as well as purchase different kinds of superb sakes and related souvenirs. They even had Plum sake and Sake candy! We bought some sake for our friends, as souvenir.
