Lonely Mouth- Sydney’s vegan ramen joint by the founders of RaRa Ramen

I’m so excited to find out that a VEGAN version of RaRa Ramen has opened in Newtown…. Finally, there is a ramen bar in Sydney that offers a full vegan menu!

I visited RaRa Ramen at the end of last year to try out their vegan menu and I fell in love with their Shio Soy ramen. With an amazing first-time dine-in experience, I became a fan of RaRa…And this is why I got super excited when I heard that the restaurant has opened a plant-based joint in Newtown. It was a such great news for me, as a vegan and ramen lover, to know that Sydney now has a plant based ramen bar. I was also  very happy because Lonely Mouth  is a vegan version of RaRa!

Lonely Mouth (Newtown)

Lonely Mouth is named after kuchisabishii, which is a Japanese term for longing to have or put something in one’s mouth. It is the desire to put food in your mouth when you’re feeling bored. I’m sure you would’ve experienced this feeling before…. because I definitely have! However, when I feel kuchisabishii I’m more likely to eat some snacks rather than a bowl of ramen, but, that might just be because I don’t live close enough to the restaurant to go there often…Anyhow, it is still fabulous to know that there is now a vegan ramen bar opened in Sydney!

When I visited Lonely Mouth with my husband, the one thing that had surprised me was that the menu was very similar to RaRa. The menu had some dishes that were sold at RaRa, but of course, with some variations as everything in the Lonely Mouth menu were vegan… and I was so happy!

For entrée, we ordered the Cauliflower Karaage as this was one of the dish that was not offered at RaRa. And, it is always great to have some vegetables as Ramen contains like 99% carbs from those noodles.

The Karaage came served with chopped scallions on the top with Japanese vegan mayonnaise on the side.

It was absolutely delicious! Well balanced flavours. Definitely a great starter to stimulate my appetite.

There were two mains on our table:

The first was a Sunflower and Hempseed Shoyu, which was a sunflower and hempseed-based broth with specialty tare served with nori, shallots, seasoned with menma and plant based chashu.

When the ramen was served I was very happy to see tomatoes in the ramen…. Yum!

I ordered this ramen because I really enjoyed the soy-based ramen at RaRa. And I definitely think it was the right decision.

The ramen was scrumptious, and the broth was so tasty!

Sunflower and Hempseed Shoyu Ramen

The second ramen was the Tantanmen, which was a spicy broth with plant-based meat, shredded black fungus and a sesame tare.

The broth was spicy, creamy and a little bit sweet. Flavourful and nice.

But again, I still prefer the Shoyu based ramen.

Overall, I had a pleasurable time dining at Lonely Mouth. The food was amazing and delicious. I love how everything on the menu was vegan friendly. I would definitely come back and try the other dishes on their menu.

If you’re on the lookout for some tasty vegan ramen, I highly recommend giving Lonely Mouth a try! While you’re out and about during the pandemic, please make sure to Stay Safe.

I’m still very happy that Sydney now has a vegan ramen bar! Our lives are getting great!
