Boosting Your Immune System with Matcha Green Tea

Did you know that Matcha green tea can help boost your immune system as it strengthens your body’s first line of defence and supports healthy living?

Matcha green tea is a natural and vegan drink beneficial for everyone!

This plant leaf is known to have anti-viral and anti-inflammatory characteristics, that is packed with high antioxidants, minerals, and nutrients.

Keep reading to learn more about how it can help defend your body against flu-like diseases and reduce inflammation.

What are Matcha’s beneficial properties for strengthening the immune system?

  • Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a catechin that promotes the production of T-cells, which fights against pathogens, virus infections and minimises inflammation.

  • Matcha contains 10 times as many antioxidants as regularly brewed green tea, and it can help eliminate antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

  • Contains L-theanine and vitamin C, which are great immune system boosters that encourage the production of white blood cells and can enhance your skin’s barriers.

Matcha contains way more EGCG than Sencha!

In a Japanese magazine, there is an article that doctors chose Sencha as the most effective beverage for the immune system. Sencha contains a polyphenol called catechins and it boosts the immune system (especially a catechin called EGCG) by building immunity against bacteria and pathogens.

With that in mind, results have shown that Matcha green tea has 137 times more EGCG than Sencha (Japanese green tea), which makes it the perfect option for boosting your immune system. This is because when drinking matcha you are consuming the enter leaf as little is removed, unlike loose green tea, which is why you should try drinking a cup of matcha every day!

How to absorb EGCG effectively for your immune boost

“We are what we eat” but actually it should be “We are what we absorb”. If you are not taking matcha in the correct way, you are not taking advantage of the powerful EGCG that is in matcha!

Many people don’t know that EGCG  is very sensitive to heat where it can go bad (like having a fishy taste) as catechins are weak to heat. The tip to keeping its beautiful flavour and for a stronger immune system is to make sure to have matcha below 80°C to not destroy any catechins!

So make sure to enjoy your Sencha and Matcha under 80°C for your immune boost as well as for a refreshing flavour.

Heat vs Matcha

On another note, by using matcha in your cooking or baking, it causes the chlorophyll, which gives matcha its bright green pigment to fade after baking in such high temperatures (as they are very sensitive to heat). This is because the magnesium in the molecule will come off and the colour will fade, and it will become brown pheophytin, turning matcha’s bright colour into a dark-yellowish colour.

The bright colour you see from these baked matcha goods come from food colouring where most of these baked goods contain green food colouring.

You won’t get the maximum health benefits from matcha baked goods such as these! This is because the heat has destroyed the EGCG effects and don’t be fooled by the bright green colour- it is from green food colouring!

RECAP

Heat causes Matcha’s

  • Chlorophyll  to fade
  • EGCG effects to be destroyed
  • Taste to be bad!

So make sure not to heat Matcha over 80C to receive the maximum immune-boosting results and enjoy the beautiful taste!
