Nilgiris has been my top list to visit for a while and I am glad I finally had the chance to go!
It is not a typical Indian restaurant. This restaurant changes the menu seasonally so we can enjoy Indian food with seasonal veggies, which I think is really important and also makes for a very interesting menu that you wouldn’t find at a typical Indian restaurant. Just one thing, it is not easily made vegan, but I love Indian foods, so I allow myself to have dairy whenever I eat Indian but still avoid the menus that use excessive dairy.
We stared with papadums. Most Indian restaurants serve the papadums with Raita, the mint yoghurt but here is the varieties of dips and their raita wasn’t full of yoghurt which is amazing.
PAPADUMS & DIPS – raita & pickles of the day with sweet mango & nigella marmalade $12
For entrée, we ordered Farsi Puri Matar Chi Usad.
FARSI PURI MATAR CHI USAD – gujrati-style ajwain spiced crisp flat puris, green peas usal $15
I have never tried green pea usal and my hubby loves peas so it is so easy to pick this dish.
Green Peas Usal is a coconut and spice based fresh green peas curry from the Maharashtrian cuisine.
I am not a big fan of coconut based curry but this curry doesn’t have strong coconut flavour so I really enjoyed this rich flavourful curry with freshly made flat puris. Yum!
Another entrée, we order tandoor-smoked sweet potatoes
TANDOORI CHAKUNDAR – tandoor-smoked sweet potatoes sweet potato raita, khatti meethi chutney $15
I really enjoy the harmony of the sauce on the top of sweet potato .. raita, khatti meethi chutney which has tangy tamarind sauce and green thing… ( not sure what it is.. but so yummy. Some sort of herb).
I got scared when I saw white sprinkles, it could be coconut but luckily it wasn’t. It was vermicelli, phew.
As main, we ordered cabbage koftas. Everything was lovely but this is my most favourite dish of the day.
CALDINHO DE REPOLHO – cabbage koftas, goan-style sauce , ground cumin & coriander seeds, peppercorns & lemon juice $ 26
Koftas are so lovely but really really enjoy the gravy comes with it. Sooo yum!
Another dish is lentil curry, It was better looking curry but waiter mixed the curry (which is a part of service) so I could not take better looking photo.
KEERAI MACCHIAL – tamilnadu-style slow-cooked tour & mung lentils with spinach tempering of mustard seeds, asafoetida, dry red chillies & garlic pods in sesame oil $24
Dining at Nilgiris is a definitely great experience – amazing menu that you wouldn’t see at a typical Indian restaurant with seasonal products and all dishes are high quality and sophisticated.
We will definitely go back for different season menu!
