Matcha green tea is known for its high antioxidant content as it is rich in catechins which are powerful flavonoid polyphenol compounds (antioxidants). This analysis below shows that it contains the highest amount of antioxidant cointent compared to other superfoods that are also known for its high antioxidant content.

Matcha is far superior to other high antioxidant foods available

Matcha contains about 3% catechins, whereas black tea only contains 4% of theaflavins (a type of polyphenol). Both can be powerful antioxidants, however, green tea is associated with having greater health benefits because it contains more catechins. Two of the tea catechins, which are epicatechin and epigallocatechin (EGCG) have had an impressive history of research. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most powerful antioxidant and matcha contains the highest amount (60% of tea catechins) of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) compared to other green teas. This makes Matcha one of the most powerful free radical scavenger in the world!

Why are antioxidants found in Matcha beneficial to our health and beauty?

Prevents Diseases and Strengthens Immune System 

Antioxidants are chemical compounds that help to protect your body from chronic diseases where Matcha contains these compounds like ECGC to strengthen your body’s defence and immune system against harmful particles and infections. This is because Matcha also has anti-inflammatory properties to enhance the immune system and minimise cell damage by protecting the kidneys and restraining allergic reactions.


Matcha offers powerful cancer-fighting properties, it not only helps to prevent cancer but is also used as an adjunctive treatment for cancer. This is due to catechins (antioxidants) in matcha we mentioned earlier such as EGCG that is claimed to help in cancer prevention.

Good for Heart Health 

The catechins in green tea are thought to play an important role in lowering the total cholesterol level and the bad (LDL) cholesterol level by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive organs. EGCG was found to decrease the bad (LDL) cholesterol level, and improve the ratio between good (HDL) cholesterol and bad (LDL) cholesterol. EGCG can also lower blood pressure.

Anti-ageing and Protects the Skin

The catechins and antioxidants in Matcha assist in cell generation and prevents cell degeneration such as wrinkles or skin cancer. It restores the skin from damage and protects the collagen in your skin from toxic chemicals such as UV radiation and pollution. Matcha also has antibacterial abilities which can make the skin appear more glowy and brighter!
