Singapore’s amazing vegan food at YISUPIN and FIREFLY by Thunder Tree, in people park centre, Chinatown

Chinatown in Singapore is my go-to spot for vegan food. It is quite cheap without compromising on quality, and there are a lot of options to choose from! I enjoyed visiting two places last year in the People Park Center

People Park Center

YISUPIN

Certain dishes are not available every day at this place so it’s good to check what’s available beforehand to avoid disappointment. This place has got all Singapore’s popular dishes like  Hainanese chicken rice and Bak kut teh in a vegan version!!! The dishes I ordered were:

Shopfront

Hainanese Chicken Rice

This dish included fragrant rice with mock chicken. The ginger sauce was very tasty and was served with some veggies!

Mushroom Sarawak Kolo Dry Noodles

I have been to this place twice and two local ladies recommended other signature dishes to try; One of them suggested Mushroom sarawak kolo dry noodles. Kolo Mee is a Sarawak Malaysian dish of dry noodles tossed in a savoury pork and shallot mixture, topped off with fragrant fried onions. Instead of pork, they used mushrooms and I loved how they used curly noodles. The flavour was also amazing!

Vegan Mushroom Udon

One thing I have to say is that people in Singapore are really friendly, they just kept coming up to me to give me dish recommendations. Another lady recommended vegan mushroom udon. Yes, Udon is Japanese but she really loves this and suggested so I had to try it.  It had a thick mushroom umami-rich broth which was so tasty and comforting. Yum!!!

Nyonya Rendang Nasi Lemak

Well I had to have this in Singapore because Nyonya cuisine originated in Singapore and is a fusion of Chinese and Malay culinary traditions. Rendang Nasi Lemak is a dish including creamy and fragrant basmati rice, infused with coconut milk and pandan leaves, and served with aromatic chicken rendang. It was so amazing that they had a vegan version of this!

I highly recommend YISUPIN

If you want to enjoy Singaporean foods in a vegan version, this is the place. Absolutely amazing price! Great variety too! They offer “ elegant”  portions ( for me only because I am a big eater – my hubby says I have hollow legs ) but for this price, it makes sense.  I ate four dishes, it was hard to pick a favorite, but I would have to go with nyonya rendang! Next time I want to try Bak kut teh. I am even thinking about staying in a hotel in Chinatown next time because everything is so cheap there and still good quality.

At this place, I only ordered one dish which was;

‘’Lei Cha’ or Thunder Tea Rice

Lei cha is a 2000-year-old traditional healthy grain bowl that originated among the Hakka people in Guangdong Province. The Hakka originated in China’s central plains and are the gypies of China. They are the fourth-largest Chinese dialect group in Singapore. Lei cha is a bowl of rice topped with a balanced mix of vegetables, peanuts, dried fish, and more, served alongside a boldly flavoured ”green tea soup”

Thunder Tea Rice

What is Thunder Tea Rice soup made of?

It may vary between places, but the basic ingredients for the dish will remain largely the same: it contains green tea, mugwort, basil, fresh mint, coriander, peanuts, and sesame seeds for the paste; plus spinach, cabbage, long beans, fried tofu (tau kwa), preserved radish (chai poh), and more toasted peanuts and sesame seeds as garnishes. It may sometimes contain dried fish or shrimp, but this place only serves the vegan version.

I also got tofu with vegan mince meat as a side. What I loved the most about it was the homemade chilli paste which was sooo yum. You have to ask for it! I knew about this delicious chili but it is quite spicy so if you are not good at hot food, don’t ask!  My naughty foods-loving hubby even enjoyed it, I was hoping he was going to order something else so I could try another dish but he tried my thunder tea rice, so he ordered the same.

The Hakka Thunder Tea Rice is an ideal 21st-century health food option with its fresh, green vegetable-nuts-and-seeds composition. They have other amazing vegan food options (inc Organic vegan Aliium food), and the place was cheap and high quality!
