Organic Vegan Meal at Papurika Shokudo, Osaka Japan

As a couple with roots in different cultures –it’s always great to have Japanese meals and Western meals for couples like us, he’s Irish and I’m Japanese. While he often says he loves Japanese food, I know for a fact he just can’t eat Japanese every single day!

While we visited Paprika Shokudo back on our trip to Japan, we tried the Vegan Soy Meat Burger with Aurora Sauce, served with a side of chips. The aurora sauce is like a cocktail sauce made from mayonnaise and ketchup.

My husband especially loves chips because he is a potato man (it’s an Irish thing!) and these were not frozen; they were organic potatoes, carefully cooked. He is also serious about his burgers and quite fussy about things like the bun! Like having a soft bun that doesn’t collapse when he takes a bite. I’ve had to listen to all his stories about burgers whenever he eats one!

We even went back to order more chips because he loved them so much. It was also great to see lots of veggies on our plates, particularly the shredded cabbage. I was so glad the fussy burger man was totally satisfied!

Vegan Soy Meat Burger with Aurora Sauce – ¥1,380, extra side of chips – ¥580

My choice was the Vegan Cheese Hamburg Set Meal (1,830 yen). At lunchtime, they offer a teishoku set menu, which includes one main dish along with a small side, miso soup, organic salad, and brown rice.

Cheese Hamburg Steak Set – ¥1,830

The hamburg was a beautiful, thick patty made from organic soy mince and tofu, topped with vegan cheese made from melted mochi mix with organic soy milk and nutritional yeast. The salad was incredibly fresh, with soft lettuce leaves that were a joy to eat, unlike regular lettuce. It felt great to enjoy fresh organic veggies.

The side dish was a vegan omelette, made from tofu and vegetables—no eggs used, of course! The brown rice was a bit tough for my liking, but nothing too bothersome; it was just a bit harder than most people would prefer.

For dessert, I wanted to order an organic brownie because I had seen good reviews, but it was sold out. Instead, we got homemade vanilla ice cream, made from organic soy milk, organic rapeseed oil, organic coconut oil, and organic vanilla extract. It was delicious! Even though coconut oil is used, there was no overpowering coconut flavour, which was a win for me since I’m not a big fan of coconut in desserts.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream – ¥460

We also tried today’s muffin, which was organic and gluten-free, served with soy cream and berry sauce. All of it was delicious!

Muffin of the Day –¥550

Second Visit

On our second visit, my husband ordered a vegan pizza with organic tomatoes, Chlorella Genovese sauce, and vegan cheese . My husband’s pizza was so colourful, featuring bright green, yellow, and red ingredients! The Genovese sauce was made from organic basil, shiso (a Japanese herb), and chlorella, adding fabulous flavour to the tomato-based cheesy pizza. The cheese was the same as the one I had for the hamburger—melted mochi with nutritional yeast and organic soy milk.

Super colourful Pizza w/ Genovese Sauce – ¥1,640 / extra side of chips – ¥580

For my meal, I chose the Yakiniku Donburi Teishoku. Yakiniku means grilled meat, but in this case, it was vegan meat topped with a sweet soy sauce, served over organic brown rice. The meal came with miso soup and the same vegan omelette I had before, which was still good. The flavours were fantastic!

Yakiniku Donburi Teishoku – ¥1,470 yen

We returned to this restaurant because the food is excellent, and it’s open every single day.

During Golden Week in Japan—a national holiday when many restaurants in the CBD are closed—even some that are usually open may shut their doors. However, this restaurant remained open.

They offer a variety of vegan options, including many healthy and organic products. The meals are delicious and include a mix of both Western and Japanese cuisine.

I highly recommend this place!

Please note that lunchtime is cheaper, but the menu is more limited. We visited only during lunchtime.
