Mexican inspired all-vegan eatery – Bad Hombres Review

I love Mexican but the problem in eating plant-based Mexican in much of Australia and the western world is CHEESE.

So I was delighted to find Bad Hombres  – an all-vegan Mexican food restaurant in Sydney.

I chose this restaurant to come to for a business meeting with a non-vegan person. I studied the menu before going there, as I always do – it is a small menu but everything sounds unique. Not your usual taco, burrito, quesadilla-filled menu. I also wanted to know what the staff’s recommendations were, which was roasted Cauliflower.

So after settling in, we ordered two entrees, two mains and one side dish…. suddenly, it was a question of “can we eat this all?” The portions of each dish are extremely generous and we ordered dishes with lots of filling carbs including corn chips, corn tortillas, rice, sweet potato, potato. Many of our dishes included filling, protein-rich beans and good fats from avocados and housemade cashew cheeses (one of my highlights!). Somehow, it all tasted more unhealthy than it really was – certainly more healthy than your usual Mexican joint!

My advice for this restaurant is not to order too many dishes even though you are excited (like I was), although you can always take leftovers home!


We ordered King Mushroom Peruvian Ceviche and Nachos as our entree.

King Mushroom Peruvian Ceviche in “Leche de Tigre” w/ Sweet Potato, Coriander, Onion, Corn & Red Chilli GF   $15

This was a nice, tangy ceviche. So nice that even my fellow diner – a seafood-loving, non-vegan who was married to a Peruvian, was happy about this dish!


Nachos w/ Cheddar “Cheese”, Black Beans, Pico de Gallo, Guacamole & Cashew Crema GF, N  $15

Who doesn’t love nachos? I devoured this. Despite there being no real cheese, it was still delectable!


As a main, we ordered roasted cauliflower as per the staff’s recommendation. I really wanted to order an eggplant dish, which was another recommendation but my guest hates eggplants, so we ordered a veggie bowl instead.


Cauliflower w/ Seaweed Salt, Cashew Cream, Salsa Verde, Coriander, Onion & Corn Tortillas GF, N  $26

Very interesting dish isn’t it? Roasted cauliflower has been hot in the vegan community but I’ve never seen seaweed salt so it was definitely an interesting dish for me. I didn’t think it would be a huge portion from the sound of it but it was almost too much for both of us. I guess too much is better than too little!

The dish comes with tortillas and onion… gosh, loads of onion. My mouth was already filled with onion from the entrees, so I could not use any of the generous portion that was served.


Veggie Bowl w/ Assorted Seasonal Vegetables, Braised Black Beans, “Cilantro” Rice, Pico de Gallo & Guacamole GF   ? $16

As an Asian, I have to have rice – I am sure my fellow Asian people totally agree with me! This dish featured lovely rice topped with sweet potato, black beans and avocado. Everything was so filling, I was beginning to question how I possibly thought we could eat all this. I guess that speaks to how much more satisfying whole, plant foods are, as opposed to junk food.


Shoestring Fries w/ Oregano Salt & Chipotle Mayo GF  $9

Oh my goodness…. the vegan chipotle mayo served with these was SO SO lovely. This was lovely, although who hates fries?! I ate more than half of this portion… they really should put a ‘danger’ warning label on this dish!


I really wanted to order the dessert below… but I was just too full!

Sweet Corn Creme Brûlée w/ Burnt Chipotle-Cacao Sugar GF   $10


As I said in the beginning, don’t get too excited and order too many dishes because most dishes contain healthy carbs, good fats and proteins, which together are very filling! By the way, I took the left over foods home and enjoyed them the next day. Overall, I look forward to returning some day soon.
