Green Sprout is a plant-based restaurant in Neutral Bay, serving a mix of traditional and modern Shanghai-style dishes and is known for their large selection of fresh dumplings.
Whilst it is called Green Sprout Vegetarian, do not let this fool you it is in fact 100% vegan.
I was delighted when I found out that a new plant based restaurant had opened near me!
For 20 years, I used to live in Newtown and the Eastern suburbs there were many more vegan restaurants. However, it is hard to find a vegan restaurant where I live now. Which is why I was even more excited to learn that the one that just opened was also Asian, my favourite since I myself am Asian.
I had been wanting to go there for a while and finally had a chance to go. I knew that the dumplings there are fabulous, because they are made fresh daily, so I was ready to order ‘yumcha’ style.
First I ordered spring rolls, pan seared radish cakes and pan-fried dumplings.
Spring rolls – $6
Carrot, cabbage and glass noodles in wheat pastry.
Pan seared radish cakes – $9
I thought that the amount of spinach was very generous. I love radish cake! And yes, I am super happy that I can now have vegan radish cake so easily.
Pan Fried Chinese Cabbage Dumplings – $9
Who could hate pan-fried freshly made dumplings? Yum.
English Spinach Dumplings – $8 (front) & Broccoli, Carrot and Ginger Dumplings – $8 (back)
Both of the dumplings were a bit lacking in flavour, but I could tell that they were made fresh that day from the lovely skin. Most Asian restaurants use MSG, however Green Sprout does not, so I think that I am used to MSG veggies.
As my hubby is not a big fan of fake stuff we ordered veggie only dumplings but I would love to try the other dumplings.
Next we ordered the Claypot Tofu.
Claypot Tofu – $18
Braised bean curd, with firm tofu, mushrooms and mixed veggies
This is Green Sprout’s signature dish and my favourite dish. It had a lovely flavour and all the yumminess was in one clay pot. Not only tofu, mushrooms and veggies but it also had lovely fake calamari made from konnyaku plus different types of fake meat. I am usually not a huge fan of the fake stuff but this dish had such a great mix.
I would go back for this dish!
There are so many more dishes that I would love to try so I will be back very soon!
