7 Facts about the Weight Loss Magic of Matcha

Looking for a natural way to boost weight loss? Ever wondered about matcha’s slimming effects?

Here are 7 Facts You Need to Know about the Weight Loss Magic of Matcha!

Start slimming this summer with Matcha!

A 1999 study featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming Matcha green tea can increase thermogenesis from 8-10% to 35-43% of daily energy expenditure. Studies indicated that the combined effect of matcha can extract rich in catechins and caffeine (which both increase thermogenesis) and increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation.

A long term study indicated that men who drank matcha green tea (690 mg total catechins/day), had two times greater weight loss and fat loss than a placebo group. EGCG in matcha can increase fat breakdown (i.e. Boost lipolysis), and also block the formation of fat cells (adipogenesis).

Matcha can also help to control your hunger and cravings. EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) is a catechin with many prevalent health-protective effects and is highly present in Matcha. The EGCG in matcha boosts the level of cholecystokinin (CCK), a gut hormone that is released in response to eating and recognized as an appetite suppressant. So, it is recommended to have matcha in between meals!

Did you know stress hormones don’t only stress us out but can also impact our weight? They affect our appetite, boost our cravings for unhealthy foods, and even accumulate abdominal fat. For instance, caffeine often causes a spike in the level of insulin and cortisol, a stress hormone. With high levels of cortisol running through your bloodstream, your hunger increases, causing your metabolism to slow down. This leads to increased body fat storage as calories help you cope with the increased stress. However, matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid that naturally lowers the production of cortisol, thus avoiding these effects.

Compounds in matcha, particularly EGCG, reduce our cells’ fat absorption by restricting the digestive enzymes responsible for breaking down fat. These catechins interfere with the digestive process, slowing the rate at which fat is absorbed in the body. This means that instead of being absorbed and stored in the body, fat passes through the digestive system without being fully absorbed.

Blood sugar levels are closely tied to weight loss due to their influence on insulin production and fat storage. When blood sugar levels spike, insulin is released to help cells absorb glucose for energy. However, excessive glucose not immediately used for energy gets stored as fat. Matcha contains polysaccharides and polyphenols, with polysaccharides playing a role in absorbing glucose and polyphenols lowering the production of amylase—an enzyme that breaks down carbs into glucose. Together, their combined effect helps the reduction of blood sugar levels by controlling the absorption and breakdown of glucose in the body.

Did you know our body functions the best in an alkaline environment? That is, consuming alkaline foods and beverages contributes to a more alkaline bloodstream. This alkaline state is crucial for weight loss, as it balances the acidity in our bodies, and matcha is one of the best alkaline-forming drinks.

When our body becomes too acidic, it produces fat cells to protect us from those acids. This means an acidic body can lead to extra weight. Whereas, having an alkaline body means a slimmer figure! That’s where matcha steps in. Unlike other caffeinated drinks, like coffee and tea, that make our body more acidic and trigger fat cell production, matcha’s alkaline nature keeps our body balanced without needing those extra fat cells.
