A 1999 study featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming Matcha green tea can increase thermogenesis from 8-10% to 35-43% of daily energy expenditure. Studies indicated that the combined effect of matcha can extract rich in catechins and caffeine (which both increase thermogenesis) and increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation.

A long term study indicated that men who drank matcha green tea (690 mg total catechins/day), had two times greater weight loss and fat loss than a placebo group. EGCG in matcha can increase fat breakdown (i.e. Boost lipolysis), and also block the formation of fat cells (adipogenesis).

The EGCG in matcha boosts the level of cholecystokinin (CCK), a gut hormone that is released in response to eating and recognized as an appetite suppressant. Compounds in matcha, particularly EGCG, reduce our cells’ fat absorption by restricting the digestive enzymes responsible for breaking down fat. These catechins interfere with the digestive process, slowing the rate at which fat is absorbed in the body. This means that instead of being absorbed and stored in the body, fat passes through the digestive system without being fully absorbed.

Blood sugar levels are closely tied to weight loss due to their influence on insulin production and fat storage. When blood sugar levels spike, insulin is released to help cells absorb glucose for energy. However, excessive glucose not immediately used for energy gets stored as fat. Matcha contains polysaccharides and polyphenols, with polysaccharides playing a role in absorbing glucose and polyphenols lowering the production of amylase—an enzyme that breaks down carbs into glucose. Together, their combined effect helps the reduction of blood sugar levels by controlling the absorption and breakdown of glucose in the body.
